In 2011, an article published by R. Underwood et al. in Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery titled “A comparison of explanted Articular Surface Replacement and Birmingham Hip Resurfacing components.” evaluated the relative safety and efficacy of the DePuy ASR hip replacement as compared to Birmingham Hip Resurfacing components.

In recent years, a number of articles have been published demonstrating the tendency for premature failure of DePuy ASR hip replacements, and Birmingham Hip Resurfacing components have been often used as a safety standard for metal-on-metal hip replacements.

While this study did not find significant differences in blood metal ion levels between the two brands of hip replacements (tiny metal particles have been found to wear off from the metal hip implants, causing a variety of health problems ranging from hypersensitivity to cancer risk), Underwood et al. (2012) found “The Articular Surface Replacement (ASR) hip resurfacing arthroplasty has a failure rate of 12.0% at five years, compared with 4.3% for the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR).”

These findings came from a retrospective analysis of “66 ASR and 64 BHR explanted metal-on-metal hip replacements with the aim of understanding their mechanisms of failure.”

However, the team did find that “The ASR had a significantly increased rate of wear of the acetabular component (p = 0.03) and a significantly increased occurrence of edge loading (p < 0.005), which can be attributed to differences in design between the ASR and BHR.”

Due to the fact that a number of people have used DePuy ASR hip replacements unaware of the excess risk for premature device failure, many DePuy ASR lawsuits have been filed.  As such, if you or a loved one used a DePuy ASR or DePuy ASR XL hip replacement, you may be entitled to significant financial compensation for your injuries.
