The antidepressant Paxil happens to be an extremely strong teratogen, which means it causes birth defects.  In fact, it is such a strong teratogen that a pregnant woman is better off using cocaine than taking Paxil!

The birth defects that Paxil causes include:

Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS)
Hypoplastic Right Heart Syndrome (HRHS)
Atrial Septal Defects (ASD)
Ventral Septal Defects (VSD)
Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN)
Hypertension
Cleft Mitral Valve
Cardiomyopathy
Tricuspid  Stenosis
Cleft Mitral Valve
Craniosynostosis
Omphalocele
Patent Ductus Arteriosus
Bicuspid Aortic Valve
Tricuspid  Stenosis

Those birth defects are life-threatening, and very expensive to treat.

If you are a pregnant woman and you’re taking Paxil, please talk to your doctor to make sure that he or she believes it is safe to do so.  Remember – don’t stop taking medication because of anything you read on the Internet.
