In 2006, the government-mandated Canadian organization Health Quality Ontario published the results of a study in Ontario Health Technology Assessment Series that aimed to “assess the safety and effectiveness of metal on metal (MOM) hip resurfacing arthroplasty for young patients compared with that of total hip replacement (THR) in the same population.”

This study, titled “Metal-on-Metal Total Hip Resurfacing Arthroplasty: An Evidence-Based Analysis.” is one of many studies that show the danger of metal-on-metal hip replacements published in the last decade or so.

Reviewing a number of other studies on metal-on-metal hip replacements and the outcomes of total hip resurfacing arthroplasty procedures, this team found that revision (failure and replacement) rates for the two procedures were comparable, a finding not often seen in other similar reports (see link above).

However, a good deal of concern was raised in this paper about “about metal wear debris and its systemic distribution throughout the body.”

The authors write, “Detectable metal concentrations in the serum and urine of patients with metal hip implants have been described as early as the 1970s, and this issue is still controversial after 35 years. Several studies have reported high concentration of cobalt and chromium in serum and/or urine of the patients with metal hip implants. Potential toxicological effects of the elevated metal ions have heightened concerns about safety of MOM bearings. This is of particular concern in young and active patients in whom life expectancy after implantation is long.”

Due to the fact that a major manufacturer of metal-on-metal hip replacements, DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc., has failed time and again to warn users of these and other side effects associated with its ASR and ASR XL hip replacement systems, a number of DePuy ASR lawsuits have been filed.
